Why We Walked Away, Started Our Own
Company, And Built Sentinel Roofing
Because If Our Name Is On The Roof,
We’re The Ones Responsible For It
From Tyler and Cailey Lea, owners of Sentinel Roofing:
Sentinel Roofing didn’t start because we wanted to “own a roofing company.” It started because we were already solving roofing problems – and we got tired of watching those solutions get ignored.
Before Sentinel, we were working for another roofing company. We were the ones in the field identifying issues, recommending the right fix, and trying to take care of homeowners the right way.
But we weren’t the ones making the final call.
More than once, we’d recommend the best solution for a customer – something that would protect the house long-term or prevent a problem from getting worse – only to have it overruled.
Then months later, the same decision would finally get approved… after the damage was already done.
Relationships got strained. And problems got bigger than they needed to be.
At some point, you realize: If you’re going to be responsible for solving problems, you need the authority to actually fix them.
So we left and built our own company. Sentinel Roofing officially launched in March of 2023, built around a simple principle:
If our name is on the roof, we’re responsible for it.
Why We Chose The Name “Sentinel”
A sentinel is someone whose job is to stand watch and protect what’s behind them – that’s exactly how we see a roof.
Your roof isn’t just a layer of shingles – it’s the system standing between your home and everything Florida throws at it. Heat. Wind. Storms. Water.
Our job is to build that protection correctly… and then stand behind it.
That idea is baked into the name.
Sentinel Roofing exists to guard homes from the elements, which is why our tagline has always been: “Your shield against the elements.”
Roofing Done With Systems — Not Shortcuts
One of the things we learned early in this industry is that roofing companies often talk a big game about quality… but very few actually build systems around it.
At Sentinel, we focus heavily on proof and process.
For example:
- We install roofing systems designed to meet higher performance standards, not just minimum code.
- We register manufacturer warranties ourselves, paying the registration fee so homeowners don’t have to deal with the paperwork later.
- We work with manufacturers like CertainTeed at the Premier level, which gives homeowners heavy-duty products and allows access to stronger warranty coverage options.
A lot of roofing companies say they “offer warranties.” But we build systems that actually make sure those warranties get honored.
Because the real test of a roof isn’t installation day – it’s what happens years later.
Where Sentinel Is Headed
Right now, Sentinel Roofing is still a growing company — but we’re intentional about how we grow.
In the roofing industry, there’s a point where companies get so large that quality control becomes harder, crews multiply too quickly, and accountability starts to disappear.
Our long-term goal is to grow Sentinel to meet the sweetspot in the middle. For us, this is when a company is considered a strong, stable size where you can maintain oversight and systemswithout losing control of quality.
Beyond that point, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
We’d rather build a company known for:
- consistent craftsmanship
- strong systems
- and long-term accountability
than one chasing volume.
What Sentinel Really Means
Sentinel isn’t just a company name – it’s a responsibility.
A sentinel stands watch. That’s exactly how we approach every roof we install. We build it to guard the home. And then we stand watch over the work we put our name on.
Because if our name is on the roof…
we’re the ones responsible for protecting it.
